Survive an Earthquake

A little knowledge and a few precautionary measures can enormously increase your chances of surviving an earthquake.  The keys are education and preparing in advance. Here are a few tips that will help you survive an earthquake that are very prominent in SAARC countries especially in India.

Earth Care- Before the Earthquake:

Stock up on emergency supplies like batteries, flashlights, first aid kit, bottled water, two weeks food and medical supplies, blankets, cooking fuel, tools needed to turn off your gas, water and electric utilities.
Arrange your home for safety: Store heavy objects on lower shelves and store breakable objects in cabinets with latched doors. Don't hang heavy mirrors or pictures above where people frequently sit or sleep.
Store flammable liquids away from potential ignition sources such as water heaters, stoves and furnaces.
Learn where the main turn-offs are for your water, gas and electricity. Know how to turn them off and the location of any needed tools.

During the Earthquake:

If you are indoors, stay there. Quickly move to a safe location in the room such as under a strong desk, a strong table, or along an interior wall. The goal is to protect you from falling objects and be located near the structural strong points of the room. Avoid taking cover near windows, large mirrors, hanging objects, heavy furniture, heavy appliances or fireplaces.
If you are outdoors, move to an open area where falling objects are unlikely to strike you. Move away from buildings, power lines and trees.
If you are driving, slow down smoothly and stop on the side of the road. Avoid stopping on or under bridges and overpasses or under power lines, trees and large signs. Stay in your car.

After the Earthquake:

Check for injuries; attend to injuries if needed.
Check for damage. If your building is badly damaged you should leave it until it has been inspected by a safety professional.
If you smell or hear a gas leak, get everyone outside and open windows and doors. Do not use any electrical appliances because a tiny spark could ignite the gas.
If the power is out, unplug major appliances to prevent possible damage when the power is turned back on.

Sometimes natural calamities are caused due to human activities. Think of how to make good measures for the welfare of the Earth and do your bit!

Current Environmental Issues

It is high time for human beings to go green and take initiatives towards saving the earth from major environmental issues. If ignored today, these ill effects are sure to curb human existence in the near future. Engineering developments are resulting in resource depletion and environmental change and climate change destruction.
Here are 10 significant current environmental issues, where human beings play an important role in its cause.

1. Pollution:   Pollution is not only limited to water, soil and noise but has extended to light, visual, point and non-point sources. Human beings and their actions are majorly responsible for causing all wild and wacky types of pollution.

2. Climate Change:  Climate change is rapidly occurring due to the ill effects of human actions responsible for disturbing and harmful out comings such as global warming, greenhouse effect, etc. Some of these include melting of Polar Regions, occurrence of new diseases and permanent inhibition in growth of certain plants essential for human survival.

3. Global Warming:  This is is another environmental issue which is - increase in earth’s temperature due to the effect of greenhouse gases. Without these gases, this planet would turn be cold for life to exist. Global warming can have long-lasting effects which can result in melting of glaciers, climate change, droughts, and diseases.

4. Deforestation:  Deforestation means, clearing of forests for means of agriculture, industrial or urban use.  It involves the permanent end of forest cover to make that land available for the residential, commercial or industrial purpose.

The long-term effects of deforestation are devastating as they may cause floods, soil erosion, an increase in global warming, wildlife extinction etc.

5. Overpopulation:  This is a never-ending human tragedy which is responsible for causing all types of environmental issues. Despite efforts taken by the government. overpopulation is difficult to control at international level.

6. Industrial and Household Waste:  The presence of huge landfills sites across the city pose serious environmental concerns. It affects human health, degrades soil quality, effects wildlife etc.

7. Acid Rain:   Acid rain can occur in the form of rain, snow, fog. Acid rain may cause due to erupting volcanoes, rotting vegetation, bacterial decomposition and lightening generate nitrogen dioxide.

8. Ozone Layer Depletion:   The main cause of depletion of ozone layer is determined as excessive release chlorofluorocarbons. CFCs are found to have a direct impact on the depletion of the ozone layer.

9. Genetic Engineering:  Genetic modification of food, human and animal organs seems like the gem of science and technology but has major harmful effects.

10. Urban Sprawl:   Today almost all countries are using the land irresponsibly to meet the ever-growing demand of the greedy human wishes. A natural environment consisting of flora and fauna is indiscriminately destructed and lost completely instead of being replaced. http://www.gogreenindia.co.in/acrossindia/

The Heated Earth

The warming and cooling of our blue planet is a natural phenomenon and is a result of subtle shifts in its orbit as the atmosphere or surface changed and also because of the variance in the Sun’s energy which is responsible for climate change But, the past century has witnessed a cataclysm in this change solely because of “global warming.” Global warming is the bizarrely hasty swell in Earth’s average surface temperature principally due to the greenhouse gases released because of the reckless usage and consumption of fossil fuels. The global average surface temperature has risen exponentially, and the rate of temperature increase has nearly doubled in the last 50 years.

Earth’s temperature rise begins with the Sun. More or less 30 percent of the incoming sunlight is reflected back and the remaining 70 percent is absorbed by the land and ocean, and by the atmosphere. The absorbed solar energy is responsible for heating up the earth. This absorption and radiation of heat by the atmosphere is the natural greenhouse effect that is essential and beneficial for life on Earth. If there were no greenhouse effect, the Earth’s average surface temperature would have been very chilly and uncomfortable. Due to careless human behavior and actions the concentration of greenhouse gases has risen immensely; the chief reasons being deforestation and burning of fossil fuels. The atmosphere today contains more greenhouse gas molecules and hence all the climate change issues are occurring all over the world. We should pledge to Go Green & work for Earth care to keep our planet from degrading any further. http://www.gogreenindia.co.in/thegoodearth/

Stand For The Planet

Planet Earth is distinct in all ways. It is the home to Homo sapiens or humans, a paradise of flora and fauna, a mesmerizing wonder. Earth has witnessed millions of years of evolution till today, the state of beauty in which it is. All of this was a slow and gradual process. The human race to its credit has the fastest evolution rate. The flora and fauna, the animal species, birds; none has evolved at such a pace. The human brain is a gift of nature to us that was meant to protect Planet Earth. Unfortunately, a victim of over evolution, humans have dominated this planet time and again; using all the resources for their benefit. We to our credit have the concrete jungles that we call cities.

All cities were built around water bodies because water is the basic requirement of all life force on this planet. Managing our requirements of food and survival has always been an easy game and nature has been our regular victim. We cleared acres of jungles to establish our habitat. We have reclaimed water bodies to create more space for our expansion. Starting with optimum use of resources we ended up in the exploitation of resources.

If we go on making a list of what we have destroyed in this race for evolution, we will end up with a long list of species, water bodies, green belts who have been our beloved victims. All our actions have given rise to consequences or an unnatural phenomenon like global warming, ozone depletion, water pollution etc. A handful of us have understood what we have done and make an effort in this regard. If we talk of our very own country that we boast of, river Ganges and the Yamuna are a very clear victim of our actions. These rivers which we proclaim to be pious for us have been defaced and polluted by industries that we established to meet our needs. The term Global Warming applies equally for us and we have made a major contribution for it.

The need of the hour is to Go Green and Save Earth. Simple steps can make a big difference in this direction.

•        When we cut down trees, we should make sure we plant at least the equal number of trees to ensure that our future generations get to see what we call a TREE.

•        Resort to cleaner fuels for our energy requirements. One day we will have to because petrol and diesel won’t be around for long as per the current consumption.

•        Protect water resources. They are not for our dumping purpose. It is the water we drink.

•        Start creating awareness and educating children from a small age so that they do not repeat our mistakes and keep the gifts of nature in high regards.

•        To protect ourselves from dire consequences we need to take actions on the current rate by which we are polluting our Earth.

Sooner or later we have to realize otherwise our future will pay the price of our actions. The solution lies in very simple and disciplined actions. All we need to do is start taking actions and not delay them anymore. Go Green, Save Earth. Wake up before it’s too late.

Environmental Concerns of Biological Diversity

Biodiversity is a collective name give for the variety of life on Earth. The number of species of plants, animals, and microorganisms, the enormous diversity of genes in these species, the different ecosystems on the planet, such as deserts, rainforests and coral reefs are all part of a biologically diverse Earth. Biodiversity boosts ecosystem productivity where each species, no matter how small, all have an important role to play. It has long been feared that human activity is causing massive extinctions. Despite increased efforts at conservation, it has not been enough and biodiversity losses continue.

There is no denying in the fact that our environment is constantly changing. However, as our environment changes, so does the need to become increasingly aware of the problems that surround it. With a massive influx of natural disasters, warming and cooling periods, different types of weather patterns and much more, people need to be aware of what types of environmental problems our planet is facing. Climate change is the single biggest environmental and humanitarian crisis of our time. We must act now to spur the adoption of cleaner energy sources at home and abroad.

Environmental protection and preservation of the planet is the responsibility of every individual and community on Earth and Go Green is spreading the awareness Across SAARC nations including India suggesting ideas for Go Green. If you share any of the environmental concerns, you must take action to reduce your personal and household impact on the planet, educate other members of your community on environmental issues and ultimately Save Environment.

Campaign against Environment Woes

Global warming is the biggest issue for people nowadays Glaciers have shrunk, ice on rivers and lakes is breaking up earlier, plant and animal ranges have shifted and trees are flowering sooner. Burning fossil fuels such as natural gas, coal, oil and gasoline raises the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and carbon dioxide is a major contributor to the greenhouse effect and global warming. The outcome of any significant climate change will be varied rather than simply an overall increase in average or nocturnal temperatures.

Go green india is putting forward such an initiative to make people aware about these climate changes and precautions. With the entire goings around environmental sphere, scientists predicted in the past that there would be effects which would result from global climate change and they are now occurring in terms of loss of sea ice, accelerated sea level rise and longer, more intense heat waves. The climate change impact due to global warming in India is the increase in number of people suffering from death, disease and injury from heat waves, floods, storms and droughts.

Considering the seriousness of the situation, there are two ways we can deal - mitigation and climate change adaptation. Mitigation addresses the root causes, by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while adaptation seeks to lower the risks posed by the consequences of climatic changes. Both approaches will be necessary, because even if emissions are dramatically decreased in the next decade, adaptation will still be needed to deal with the global changes that have already been set in motion. If we take action to radically reduce greenhouse gas emissions now, there’s a good chance that we can limit average global temperature rises. This doesn’t mean that there will be no more changes in the climate – warming is already happening – but we could limit, adapt to and manage these changes. So, we should go green and save earth.

Initiatives of Go Green

Green across India invites all its readers to come and join the parade where you can read, reflect, discuss, present, and summarize your point of views as well as efforts. Your hands will be joined by their media partner times of India that is not only working to collect latest happening on ecology but will also work to disseminate your efforts in this respect. A recent UN report on climate change claims that India is among the few counted nations that will be witnessing abrupt climate changes in coming years. The drastic change in climate cycle brings with it a greater risk of food & water shortage which will cause mal nutrition in those living below poverty line. We need to bring dramatic changes in our habits, share ideas for go green and attitude as the given deadline is not far away than middle of present century. The latest green news from India focuses on all such details along with latest measures that are being taken in different parts of country to fight this situation.

Here at Go Green SAARC India, we present our readers with best selection of stories pertaining to environmental friendly initiatives across SAARC region. Through these stories we intend to disseminate inspiration on all levels which can bloom in form of eco-friendly policies, regulations, habits, and measures. South Asian nations are the biggest victims of malefic activities that are swiftly pushing our ecology towards destruction. The region also treasures some of the biggest reserves of natural resources that are being coerced towards extinction. The save environment movement in this section has inspired a complete generation of individuals and communities who are fastly breeding new ideas to go green. Along with, there are many who are looking for ways to improve their ecology but are compelled to sustain with pollution due
to lack of information.

Understanding the need of the hour, we have taken up this responsibility and committed a team that brings forth a series of innovative eco-friendly projects that are being adopted at individual and group levels. As a nation and as a society we need to bring changes on all fronts be it forest or SAARC's wildlife. All aspects of environment are equally vulnerable to climate change convention and pollution but the basic measure starts right from lower levels where people need to adopt an eco-friendly lifestyle leaving behind consumerism.

Going Eco – Friendly

When it comes in raising awareness for environmental concerns, Green Across India is a prominent name which is known for spreading information about current status of the Indian environment. It all depends on how we use natural resources affects our health and health of our communities. Because everyone uses these sources, we all have some part to play in protecting, preserving and sharing these resources. One efficient and acclaimed way is through eco-friendly projects.

Eco-friendly projects consist of such eco-friendly products which are those that do not harm the environment, whether in their production, use or disposal. Some of these going green products when in use, help conserve energy, minimize carbon footprint or the emission of greenhouse gases, and does not lead to substantial toxicity or pollution to the environment. There are several organizations and companies that are actively developing green products, in the process of actively contributing towards a cleaner, safer, and ecologically more balanced environment for the present and our future generations.

The situation demands of measures for creating awareness for help people to adapt the climate change. Adaptation involves making adjustments in our decisions, activities and thinking because of observed or expected changes in climate, in order to moderate harm or take advantage of new opportunities.

It becomes necessary to educate and empower people about Earth Care scenario to create healthy, just and sustainable communities and how to make good earth with the ways to mitigate them across. To achieve that we have to make efforts to conserve, protect, and restore all these valuable resources like to protect water resources offered by Earth so that we can save all the living beings at risk.

Adapting to Climate Change

This should not come as surprise that Global climate change has already had observable effects on
the environment. Glaciers have shrunk, ice on rivers and lakes is breaking up earlier, plant and animal ranges have shifted and trees are flowering sooner. Environmental Awareness with Go Green

Since long time, Go Green has been focused on improving the environment through raising awareness for the crucial topic of environmental concerns and involving the community wherever possible. The need for local people to be involved meaningfully with the improvement of their landscape is compelling. Go Green India project is dedicated to deliver information related to the latest happenings that are taking place in Indian environment. The team working behind this projects aims at bringing forth the various initiatives that are being taken on different levels to slow down and mitigate the rapid changes that are rapidly leading us towards destruction.

These problems cause small increases in the planet’s temperature that lead to big, permanent changes in the climate. Not only human beings but the wild and wacky wildlife is also dependent on these changes of environment. This makes preservation of the natural environment essential, for maintaining community sustainability. There is no room for any more delays or procrastination with respect to efforts in this direction.

Green Across has taken initiative and spreading the awareness regarding environmental hazards and the ways to mitigate them across SAARC (The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) nations like India. These problems cause small increases in the planet’s temperature that lead to big, permanent changes in the climate. Dramatic changes in the climate are occurring all around the world and causing more frequent natural disasters and serious problems for people’s health. Not only human beings but the wild and wacky wildlife is also dependent on these changes of environment. This makes preservation of the natural environment essential, for maintaining community sustainability. http://www.gogreenindia.co.in/

Environmental Awards

When there is a work which is needed to be recognized for the excellence in initiatives to counter climate change and recognize efforts, Earth Care Awards are one way to appreciate the ones which are doing the job well. These initiatives are mitigation and adaptation projects by industries, communities and individuals which are directed towards helping the environment in one way been acknowledged time and again at various national and international levels. An environmental award is usually awarded for activities that lead to the protection of the environment. The awards may be open to the global community or only within a particular country or field of work. The Earth Care Awards or Environmental Awards in India are presented to identify such initiatives which seek to encourage actions across several sectors with special reference to mitigation and adaptation imperatives related to climate change.

It is unique and is aimed at highlighting action of direct relevance to the countries in the region to tackle challenges posed by climate change. The award is for excellence in climate change mitigation and adaptation. This is in response to the recently growing consciousness about issues associated with climate change and that it is important to identify and foster locally evolved options to reduce emissions, approaches to protect land and water resources and other innovations for reducing impacts, emphasizing appropriate environmental action. These are backed by Green Across India, which is a prominent organization working to spread the information and awareness about the current status of the Indian environment. It all depends on how we use natural resources affects our health and health of our communities. It has been responsible for the raising initiatives promoting the protection of these natural resources like water and land resources as life of people and wildlife depends on it.

To achieve that we have to make efforts to conserve, protect, and restore all these valuable resources offered by Earth so that we can save all the living beings at risk.
